Dear Visionary Leader,
Billion Soul Greetings! Over the last two weeks, we conducted two dynamic Cutting Edge Roundtables in Orlando and Washington, DC.
In Orlando, Dr. Stan Toler, General Superintendent for The Church of The Nazarene, taught “The Seven Steps To Powerful Presentations.” In the heart of his message he challenged us to stay focused during our presentations. If people cannot clearly see what we are trying to share with them, then they will not learn and apply the principles of our sermons.
Dr. Elmer Towns taught at the Washington, DC Roundtable, challenging us with “Steps To Greater Faith.” A portion of his teaching on developing a God-given vision that people can see in their minds. This great visionary teaching is included in the “coaching” section below.

Since I was two years old, I have had to wear strong prescription glasses to be able to view the world around me. I could not tell you how many different pairs of glasses I have worn over the decades. When I take my glasses off, I can see but my world is not focused. Unfocused messages produce unclear listeners. If we see better, our listeners will hear better!
How do we paint a portrait so others can focus on the vision we are casting? When Dr. Elmer Towns was president of a Canadian seminary, he took a painting class. The lessons his instructor gave he now applies to how we can portray our visionary messages to our congregations or organizations. Every great painting needs the following seven elements:
- Horizon: Needs more of God than man. Make sure that the Lord is high and lifted up.
- Mountains: A vision is not realistic without barriers. Be sure to tell the people where the challenges are in the future.
- Path: A vision must lead you somewhere. People need to be shown the path; not left to find it by themselves.
- Flowers: A vision needs some enjoyable items. Make the visionary journey enjoyable for the people.
- Birds: A vision should make your spirit soar. People need their spirits to become larger.
- People: A vision needs to be fleshed out in life. There is nothing better than real life testimonies.
- Yourself: A vision is nothing without the vision seers. People need to see where they fit in the vision.
More than 125 years ago, J. Hudson Taylor, who took the Gospel to China in 1853 said, " There can be no faith without risk." Church history is filled with visionary leaders who took the risk, paid the price and helped to enlighten the path of faith for future followers of Christ. Become more of a visionary leader today. The world needs you. We all need you. Blessings!
